FYSICA 2019 at Science Park Amsterdam

FYSICA, the annual physics conference of the Netherlands' Physical Society (NNV), will be organized at Amsterdam Science Park this year. The conference is aimed at all physicists in the Netherlands, from high school teachers to researchers. Keynote speakers will be Kobus Kuipers, recipient of the Physica Prize 2019, and 2018 Physics Nobel Prize winner Gérard Mourou.

The location of FYSICA rotates annually between Dutch universities. This year, the conference will be held in Amsterdam and co-organized by the University of Amsterdam, the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam and the NNV. The location is a special one: a temporary pavillion at the Amsterdam Science Park, right in between a host of physics institutes and companies.

Lectures, lab tours, and much more

Two exciting keynote speakers headline the FYSICA program. Kobus Kuipers, one of the pioneers in the field of nanophotonics and recipient of the Physica Prize 2019, will kick off the programme with a lecture about his research. The physics part of the day will be closed with a lecture by Gérard Mourou, one of the three laureates for the Nobel Prize in Physics 2018. Mourou will talk about his prize winning research on the physics of very short and intense laser pulses.

In between the two plenary lectures, there will be an extensive program of focus sessions, lab tours, a physics market, award ceremonies and other physics-related activities. Never before have so many different lab tours been organized as part of the FYSICA programme, which is why the organizers decided to have two different rounds of tours where the participants can get a first hand taste of the exciting physics research that is carried out at Science Park Amsterdam.

As usual, FYSICA ends with an entertaining evening program. After the conference dinner, the musical theater show Wereld in Trilling (Vibrating World) will be performed - top shelf physics theater.

Plenty of reasons, therefore, to come to Science Park on 5 April and meet your fellow physicists. Not surprisingly, this is reflected in the day's theme slogan: Connected.
