Amsterdams innovations

The Amsterdam Science & Innovation Award is a collaboration between Amsterdam universities and research institutes. Every year more Amsterdam institutions affiliate themselves with the award. The aim of the annual event is to reveal knowledge from Amsterdam universities and research centers. For researchers, students and workers from different disciplines it is the opportunity to bring their ideas to the attention and to present themselves.

The entrepreneurship of the participants is becoming increasingly important; the idea must not only fulfill a need in society but can also be applied. This year more emphasis is put on the link with companies. For the first time the Science & Business program is part of the event. In the run-up to May 26, companies are approached and matched according to their discipline and strategy to the entries that may be relevant to them. On the day the of the event participants and companies meet.

After the matching program, the finalists must try to convince the jury of their idea with an elevator pitch. With the award of EUR 10,000, the audience or the stimulation award of both EUR 5,000, the researcher or student can develop his/her idea further. The jury consists of representatives from industry, such as Marja Zonnevylle from Shell and Janine Huizenga from Waag Society, next to chairman Prof. Rinnooy Kan. Startup Fest Europe

This year the Award is part of Startup Fest Europe, a European festival of more than 30 independent events that help startups grow faster. This is done by bringing together founders, investors, corporates and developers around specific themes such as water, energy, high tech, food and agriculture and health. The events take place throughout the Netherlands. The collaboration with the Startup Fest fits in well with the ambitions of the knowledge institutions who created the Amsterdam Science & Innovation Award 11 years ago. Activity follows from innovation and innovative ideas are the basis of a startup company.
