Demonstrator Lab launch ASP

Following the tremendous success of the Demonstrator Lab at the VU campus, the Amsterdam knowledge institutes have decided to launch a new location at Amsterdam Science Park. The new location will be situated in the heart of the UvA Faculty of Science’s laboratories, on the ground floor of building D. The reconstruction of the lab space is currently scheduled for September-November, after which the Demonstrator Lab @ Amsterdam Science Park will immediately open shop. A core support team has been assembled, and several concrete first projects have already been identified. More information will be disseminated in the coming months. Max Nieuwdorp’s innovative research on gut microbes: a path to combat fatty liver disease

Internist Max Nieuwdorp, of Amsterdam UMC, discovered a few years ago that the microorganisms in the intestines of many overweight people produce alcohol to an increased extent. Breaking down excessive alcohol leads to fatty liver disease, which in turn poses a risk of serious conditions such as diabetes and cardiovascular disease. Nieuwdorp has now received an ERC Advanced Grant of 2.5 million euros for a major study into the underlying causes of this excessive alcohol production.
