Demonstrator Lab: news and updates

June 22, 2020

Demonstrator Lab is an entrepreneurship laboratory, a learning-by-doing environment where students and staff of HvA, UvA, VU and Amsterdam UMC have the opportunity to test and transform ideas into tangible products or services. Demonstrator Lab is located at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam and is part of the IXAnext valorization program. For those who have successfully started a company through the Demonstrator Lab program, additional facilities are available at the Amsterdam Venture Studios, the university incubators located at the Amsterdam campuses.

Stichting voor Chromatografie thuis
Chromatography has proven to be a powerful technology for the separation of a mixture to perform quantitative analyses. The Foundation for Personal Chromatography aims to promote and support relatively simple analysis at home, e.g. by measuring urinary components after eating certain foods. The Foundation will not provide a ready-to-use product, but rather wants to give information on how to build one’s own set-up at home through an online platform and through organized educational days.

NEW @ AVS-VU

Two startups from the Demonstrator Lab moved to the AVS-VU Campus after successfully testing and developing their initial idea into an early-stage startup:

Blieep
Using a combination of hard- and software and wireless data transfer (NFC) technology, Blieep offers solutions to register a wide range activities which can be analyzed through an app by the customer. Blieep works for big and small companies focusing on solutions such as internal payment systems or student registration, to relieve clients from the burden of cash handling or manual registration systems.

Photosynthetic
After going through the Demonstrator Lab track and finishing the Take Off Phase One project at NWO, Photosynthetic is now working on a variation of their initial project. A spin-off from Centrum voor Wiskunde & Informatica (CWI), Photosynthetic develops a rapid, high-resolution 3D print technique for objects smaller than a millimeter. This technology makes rapid prototyping for these kinds of objects possible and reduces the production costs significantly. Website: photosynthetic.nl

Max Nieuwdorp’s innovative research on gut microbes: a path to combat fatty liver disease

Internist Max Nieuwdorp, of Amsterdam UMC, discovered a few years ago that the microorganisms in the intestines of many overweight people produce alcohol to an increased extent. Breaking down excessive alcohol leads to fatty liver disease, which in turn poses a risk of serious conditions such as diabetes and cardiovascular disease. Nieuwdorp has now received an ERC Advanced Grant of 2.5 million euros for a major study into the underlying causes of this excessive alcohol production.
