First 2021 ASIF P!tch event a success

With over 150 attendees and 30 start-up applicants, the 5 best start-ups pitched on the 21ste of January during this online event. Lexbee, Bloomcoding, Ziemi, Intrical AI and Nibblr took the stage to battle for both the Audience and the Jury price. Although all 5 pitches were of very high quality, the audience voted for Lexbee, a legal intelligence platform, and the jury for Bloomcoding, a coding for kds platform. The Audience Prize was made possible by IXA. The Next P!tch event will be held end of March. Students with an idea, MVP, or already up-and-running start-up are invited to reach out to ASIF and apply, applications will open soon.

ASIF is a venture capital fund run by students, founded to support UvA and VU students. They organizes numerous events, workshops and presentations to support students in their journey to become a successful entrepreneur. Among these events, P!TCH is one of the most successful events. ASIF organizes 3 pitch events per year, where start-ups can battle for a € 500 jury price and a € 300 audience price. The audience and jury looks at both the overall quality of the pitch, and the quality of the start-up in general.

Max Nieuwdorp’s innovative research on gut microbes: a path to combat fatty liver disease

Internist Max Nieuwdorp, of Amsterdam UMC, discovered a few years ago that the microorganisms in the intestines of many overweight people produce alcohol to an increased extent. Breaking down excessive alcohol leads to fatty liver disease, which in turn poses a risk of serious conditions such as diabetes and cardiovascular disease. Nieuwdorp has now received an ERC Advanced Grant of 2.5 million euros for a major study into the underlying causes of this excessive alcohol production.
