Max Nijman, oprichter van VU startup Flame Away, is verkozen als een van de 50 talenten die verschijnen in het Financieel Dagblad 50 onder de 35. Dit is een lijst waarin gekeken wordt naar jonge talenten die de wereld een stukje beter maken.
Max startte drie jaar geleden met een studieproject wat uitgroeide tot een product om levens te redden, de Flame Away genaamd. Het is een kunstwerk van glas, dat bij uitbreken van een brand gegooid kan worden. Volgens Nijman is het vaak voldoende om vuur te blussen. ‘Het is ontzettend motivered dat Flame Away na 3,5 jaar werk een plekje in het Financieel Dagblad heeft. Als ik hiermee ook maar één leven kan redden, is mijn doel bereikt!’ aldus Max.
Een start-up in de industrie is lastig. De zeer strenge veiligheidsregels remmen innovatie, vindt Nijman. ‘Maar door ondernemerschap leer ik veel over mezelf. Ik wil groeien in mijn werk-privébalans. Zowel mijn beste als mijn slechtste eigenschap is koppigheid. Als ik eenmaal een doel heb, laat ik het niet los. Daardoor ben ik de afgelopen drie jaar gefocust geweest op het bedrijf, maar kon ik op persoonlijk vlak dingen niet altijd doen.’
Nijman won de eerste prijs in de Idea phase van de Philips Innovation Award en hij werd geselecteerd voor de Semi Finals.
Na drie jaar onderzoek aan de Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, support bij Demonstrator Lab en de bedrijfsbrandweer haalde Flame Away de eerste ronde financiering op en kon het product ontwikkeld en gelanceerd worden.
