Vote for your favourite innovative idea in the Amsterdam Science & Innovation Award 2023! The voting portal is now live and will close on 15 October 23:59. Which innovative ideas will make it to the stage during the finale of the AmSIA ’23? You decide! The AmSIA is the competition for research based innovative ideas from all research disciplines. There are 27 pre-finalists competing for the Innovation Award within three categories: Society, Health and Environment & Climate.

At the finale on 21 November, the AmSIA’s expert jury will award € 10,000 to the 3 best ideas in the categories of Society, Health and Environment & Climate.

Max Nieuwdorp’s innovative research on gut microbes: a path to combat fatty liver disease

Internist Max Nieuwdorp, of Amsterdam UMC, discovered a few years ago that the microorganisms in the intestines of many overweight people produce alcohol to an increased extent. Breaking down excessive alcohol leads to fatty liver disease, which in turn poses a risk of serious conditions such as diabetes and cardiovascular disease. Nieuwdorp has now received an ERC Advanced Grant of 2.5 million euros for a major study into the underlying causes of this excessive alcohol production.
