VU researcher nominated for Medical Inspirator Prize
January 16, 2019Het project ‘De online Vriendschapscursus’ van Vrije Universiteit onderzoeker Tamara Bouwman is genomineerd voor de Medische Inspirator Prijs. Het project dat gericht is om eenzame ouderen uit hun sociale isolement te halen is een van de twee projecten die in de running is voor de hoofdprijs van € 100.000. Om de prijs te winnen moet Tamara zoveel mogelijk stemmen binnenhalen.
Tamara hoopt met behulp van de prijs de cursus verder te ontwikkelen en samen met Stichting de Gouden Dagen toegankelijk te maken voor eenzame ouderen. “De Online Vriendschapscursus helpt eenzame ouderen bij het herstellen van oude contacten en het maken van nieuwe vriendschappen, maar ook bij het beter leren omgaan met het alleen-zijn in het algemeen. Het lijkt zo eenvoudig, maar de opdrachten in de cursus dragen stuk voor stuk bij aan de drempel die mensen over moeten om hun eenzaamheid te verminderen.”
De Medische Inspirator Prijs is een jaarlijks initiatief van ZonMW en wordt uitgereikt aan de meest inspirerende samenwerking tussen patiënten en onderzoekers die het beste projectplan hebben voor de ontwikkeling van een medisch product. De behoefte van de patiënten of zorgverleners staat daarbij centraal.

Max Nieuwdorp’s innovative research on gut microbes: a path to combat fatty liver disease
Internist Max Nieuwdorp, of Amsterdam UMC, discovered a few years ago that the microorganisms in the intestines of many overweight people produce alcohol to an increased extent. Breaking down excessive alcohol leads to fatty liver disease, which in turn poses a risk of serious conditions such as diabetes and cardiovascular disease. Nieuwdorp has now received an ERC Advanced Grant of 2.5 million euros for a major study into the underlying causes of this excessive alcohol production.
