Launch of LubaLabs at VU brings innovations in oncology, IVF and pharmaceuticals closer to reality
The new VU spin-off LubaLabs can analyse (biological) tissues without causing damage and at low cost. The technology has the potential for many (bio-)medical and industrial applications, but still needs further development. To this end, venture builder HighTechXL is helping the researchers involved to define the commercial role within LubaLabs. After all, how do you actually turn a scientific breakthrough into a business?
From a breakthrough in physics to concrete applications
At the heart of the newly established LubaLabs lies a breakthrough in physics, whereby standard telecoms components can be used to investigate mechanical properties, such as the stiffness of tissues and cells. Differences in stiffness can, for example, distinguish diseased tissues from healthy ones, offering promising applications, such as in oncological research.
In addition, the technology opens up new possibilities within IVF treatments, such as assessing the health of egg cells, and has potential applications in both humans and animals. The technology could also be used within the pharmaceutical sector and in drug screening, as well as in cosmetic research into skin and hair quality, botany and research into microorganisms.
HighTechXL brings in external expertise, whilst the scientists involved remain active in physics
Scientists Imran Avci and Mahdi Mozdoor Mashtabi are behind LubaLabs’ innovation. To accelerate market exploration, it was decided to establish LubaLabs as a spin-off from VU University Amsterdam. Mozdoor will join the spin-off full-time after completing his postdoc at VU Amsterdam, whilst Imran Avci will work for the spin-off as a researcher on a part-time basis. Venture builder HighTech XL provides the necessary commercial knowledge and expertise.
Peter Cirkel, Business Developer at IXA, explains:
“Researchers often have a strong idea, but not necessarily the time or experience to set up a company themselves. Venture builders such as HighTechXL can play a crucial role here: they help to further develop and commercialise technology, in such a way that a company is created that is attractive to investors.“
